White House, Red Door
music and lyrics by reese neal (January 2006)
White house, red door,
chimney smoke callin’ to the folks outside, come on in here.
Come sit by the fire, where it’s warm.
Sip your cider slow and make yourself at home a while.
Kick off your shoes,
there ain’t no need to hurry off somewhere.
This is the place you want to be when you ain’t got time to spare.
The world will be a’waitin’ when you wander off back there.
Oh, my child (my child), come inside.
Rest awhile (rest awhile), ‘fore you rise.
White house, red door,
just sittin’ by the road, callin’ to the folks outside, come on in here.
Come sit right down in the rockin’ chair,
‘cause we got tales to tell so stay a spell and ease your worried mind.
Sit back, relax,
there ain’t no need to hurry off somewhere.
This is the place you ought to be when you ain’t got no time to spare.
The world’ll still be a’waitin’ when you wander off back there.
Oh, my child (my child), come inside.
Rest awhile (rest awhile), ‘fore you rise.
White house, red door,
cars go past so fast, ain’t gonna last too long, runnin on fumes.

Shady Moon Saloon
music and lyrics by reese neal (January 2006)
It was down at the Shady Moon Saloon where the tumbleweeds tangle
and drink till they drop and drag themselves off out the door.
Out in the street, shuffling feet drifting slowly along,
lost in a song they heard some place before.
And they dance with the wind, but no, they don’t know where they’re going,
and they’re all trying real hard to forget where all they been.
Down at the Shady Moon Saloon
when the midnight train comes rolling through,
It’s all aboard for a trip they’re selling you.
The barkeep and the engineer,
they’re swigging coal and shoveling beer,
tell you what they think you want to hear.
Shady Moon, tell me true,
how long 'til the sun shines through my door?
Shady Moon, Shady Moon
Tell me, will the morning bring me what I’m looking for?
'Cause I can’t wait to be back in the arms of my baby
And I can’t take another night away, please save me
From this place and all it stands for
I don’t want to tumble anymore
Shady Moon, Shady Moon Saloon…..

Look, Ma, No Hands
music and lyrics by reese neal (October 2005)
Rolled out on my own when I was just 16,
No job, no car, just this guitar, and I knew everything.
My mama she stood watching from the gray, gravel driveway.
She yelled so I could hear her, “You’ll be back someday!”
It’s all downhill from here
Easy as can be
Look, ma, no hands, and I’m picking up speed
Rolled on toward them city sounds, that midnight city glow,
Concrete, cars, crowded streets and bars, where nothing’s moving slow.
I strummed these strings and sang of things I learned when I was young.
I thought of what my mama said and all the things I done.
It’s all downhill from here
I’ve never felt so free
Look, ma, no hands, and I’m picking up speed
Rolled the dice and never thought twice that if I played the fool I’d lose.
Found out soon the streets were cold and tough and hard and mean and cruel.
Hunger had me hurting bad, been begging for my food.
Been wondering why I ever left and if what Ma had said was true.
It’s all downhill from here
But don’t you worry about me
Look, ma, no hands, and I’m picking up speed
Rolling down a dark and narrow one-way, dead-end street,
Just another tragedy of the city scene.
Just one wrong turn and I wound up on the wrong side of the tracks.
One pistol shot and I got caught with a bullet in the back.
It’s all downhill from here
Hear those sirens scream
Look, ma, no hands, and I’m picking up speed
Rolling on away back home uphill all the way,
I think I can, I think I can, but I just can’t stay.
And as I drew my final breath, I whispered so they heard
They puzzled at my dying words.
It’s all downhill from here
Easy as can be
Look, ma, no hands

Leave it Behind
music and lyrics by reese neal (2004)
Well, it turned from red to green and back again
Colors change like leaves in autumn wind
It never fails, I end up right back where I’ve been
Enough of this…it never ends
Throw a stone and shatter water like a window
All the circles rollin’ out, I’m watchin’ them go
A long, long way from here
Makin’ waves and breakin’ on a coast that’s clear
The tide rolls in…and out again
I’m gonna sail my ship over the horizon
I’m gonna sing my way beyond the setting sun
I’m gonna break on into the morning light
And like a fire, burn away all this darkness and leave it behind
And I’m gonna shine when I leave it behind

Winter Worn Days
music and lyrics by reese neal (May 2006)
First day of spring, not a bird anywhere
Clouds hanging heavy and low like they don’t plan on a-goin’ nowhere
I’m confused as the flowers awaking to find
they’re covered in snow ‘stead of warm sunshine
I’ve been feeling the weight of these winter worn days for some time
And a part of me knows that the snow’s not supposed
to take so long to say goodbye
But I guess that it’s my own fault, way I keep hanging on,
Lettin’ you drag me down by the dirty hem of your dress.
And it’s a shame I fall, every time I hear you call
My name, it’s a game that you win every time, and it’s effortless
Every day without fail, angry salesman stands at my door
Suitcase full of nothing I want, and don’t care to know what it’s for
I’m as wishful a thinker as ever there was
I keep hoping for heaven to shine down on us
I’ve been feeling the weight of these winter worn days for some time
And a part of me knows that the snow’s not supposed
to take so long to say goodbye
But I guess that it’s my own fault, way I keep hanging on,
Lettin’ you drag me down by the dirty hem of your dress.
And it’s a shame I fall, every time I hear you call
My name, it’s a game that you win every time, and it’s effortless
Not that I’ve given up, it’s just easier said than done
Letting go of something so easy is something that’s so hard to do

Long Road to You
music and lyrics by reese neal
I’m feelin’ there’s things somewhere deep inside me
Just takin’ their time while they creep up behind me
Silent and smooth as sleep sweet on a baby
Righting what’s wrong with a whisper of truth
And the things that I learned to misunderstand
Are teaching me now what a fool I have been
Perfect and posed as a puppet pretending
Strings will unravel, decay down to dust
It’s sure been a long road to you
And it’s taken a strong hand to ready me, to steady me
Been there along, and somehow I knew
As I stumbled along this road to you
And sooner or later when I least expect
It’ll roll like a river, so clear and direct
Ragged and rough as rain’s steady reflection
Lightnin’ and thunder shoot stars all around
It’s sure been a long road to you
And it’s taken a strong hand to ready me, to steady me
Been there along, and somehow I knew
Just like before, it was you at the door
Knocking for me, dying to see if I’d let You in
I want You to show me how to live again
If You can stand my impossible company
‘cause You already know this narrow road
What can I do? I'm lost without You
'cause You are the Way, the Truth, the Life...the Way
It’s sure been a long road to you
And it’s taken a strong hand to ready me, to steady me
Been there along, and somehow I knew
As I stumbled along this road to you
I’m feelin’ there’s things somewhere deep inside me
Just takin’ their time while they creep up behind me
Silent and smooth as sleep sweet on a baby

Dangerous Kind
music and lyrics by reese neal (June, 2006)
Well, I wonder whether you would ever wander over my way
to say what’s on your mind.
And I wonder whether if you ever do
would I be smooth enough to show you a good time?
Maybe, but I doubt it
I’m the kind of boy who’d treat you right.
And baby, I can do without it
‘cause somehow I already know you’re not my type.
You’re the kind of girl
I would not take home to Momma
She warned me about
How you’re beautiful, but you break all the rules,
And in the end you’d prob’ly break my heart
So don’t even start to try to feed me that line
‘cause I ain’t gonna bite.
I gotta fight this feelin’ ‘cause, girl, I know you’re one
One of the dangerous kind
Look, don’t touch, she’ll tear you up, boy
Listen what I say
Yeah, she looks so nice, but don’t look twice
If she catch you, son, oh, she gonna make you pay
Not one of us, no, she’s dangerous
best get her off your mind
if you don’t, it’s suicide
She’s one of the dangerous kind

Long Way Down
music and lyrics by reese neal (September 30, 2006)
Watching the day die slowly as it does
Feel like I am the only one
Who’s ever felt the way I do
Isn’t true
But it was so strange to see you there last night
Outside the rest’rant with your eyes
Reflecting “open,” I was hopin’
It was more than just the neon…
Sign me up
I promise I won’t let you down
Unless, of course, we find ourselves
Falling in love
Then, baby, it’s a long way down
but it feels all right
Watching the night paint pictures in the sky
Connect the dots to pass the time
Between the silence of this moon
And you
And your eyes and all the things that we won’t say
‘cause it won’t matter anyway
when we’re together, it’s better
than this dream, so in the morning when you…
wake me up
I promise I won’t let you down
Unless, of course, we find ourselves
Falling in love
Then, baby, it’s a long way down
But it feels all right

Standing on a Gold Mine
words and music by Reese Neal (February 2006)
You hang your head
You cut yourself down
And shut the ones who love you out
And you refuse to open
Your broken eyes
And take a look around
But boy you’re standin’ on a gold mine
And silver stars shine bright beneath your bed
A wealth awaits you if you want it
Listen close and hear it haunt your head
Boy, you’re standin’ on a gold mine
And silver stars shine soft and blue
A wealth awaits you where you are now
And she sings her song for you
On her knees in the deep night praying hard you’ll be there for her to hold
Mysteries but she sees right through the walls and every lie that you’ve told
So, you’ve made some mistakes, but that’s not the rest of your life
Cause when you open your eyes, that’s when you’ll finally find
all along you’ve been standing on a gold mine

Killing Time
music and lyrics by reese neal (December 2003)
I struck a match and I blew it out
I’m not much of what I always talked about
Being when I was young and invincible
I’m more of a dreamer than anything at all
I downed a drink from a broken glass
I finally found out just how slow these days can pass
I wondered whether I could ever be so brave
To get up, get out, and get myself together today
And so it goes when you’ve lost sight of hope
It seems your dreams have all gone up in smoke
So tell me where are the ones who called themselves your friends
Knowing the truth renders you unable to pretend
I’m not killing time, it’s killing me
And I’m not blind, but I can hardly see
I’ve made my mind that I don’t want to be
just getting by when its killing me
I make a move over to the window
and I pull back the blinds only to find
the windows have been boarded up a while
looks like they’ve labeled me condemned
But I’m not giving up
so I won’t crumble beneath their wrecking ball
Put on my shoes and walk out the door
I’m not quite sure just where I’m headed for
I’ll probably wind up somewhere south of where I’m supposed to be
But that’s gotta be so much better than letting this cancer get the best of me
That I won’t drive this road to nowhere
It’s not too far but you’ll never get there
Same old scenery just a blank stare
Eyes on the pain won’t show you the way
And your pocket change won’t buy you a name
Your silly words they return won’t leave my head
Your silly words they return I think I understand
What you meant when you said what you said
But I only heard what I wanted instead
I struck a match and I watched it burn
Until the ash taught me all I could learn

Purposefully Lost
music and lyrics by reese neal (July 2006)
I went out for a walk today
Found myself headed for the fort that we once made
You and me when we was still just little kids
when summer lasted longer ‘cause we never wasted it
The trails were gone which made it kind of hard to find
But I knew I’s getting close when I saw them old grapevines
A board or two still clung to the trunk of that big oak
Your daddy’s fishing poles in pieces where we left ‘em when they broke
I was missing you as I stood there thinking back
And I wonder where you are now, we grew up way too fast
We’d get purposefully lost for hours upon end
but we somehow always found our way back home again
but it’s been too long
since you’ve been gone
and I’m gonna have to find you now, I know
so no matter what it costs
there’s no distance I won’t cross
to get purposefully lost again with you
Had half a mind to turn around and head for home
But before I could I thought I heard you laugh out loud
From somewhere up ahead and I was drawn hard to the sound
The sweetest voice I ever knew was singing to me now
But it must have been a mockingbird
Mocking me as you sang every single word
But I listened anyway until the song was through
Remembering the reasons I was missing you
the whippoorwills and fireflies
and weeping willow trees
and hummingbirds are stirring up
that gentle summer breeze
crickets and the katydids orchestrate the sound
when you and me, we’re purposefully nowhere to be found

Lighten Up My Load
music and lyrics by Reese Neal (January 2007)
Matt. 11:28-30; Isaiah 61:1-3; Zeph. 3:17; Psalm 119:28
I been pressin’ in hard to hear something that’s real
But I been hard-pressed to find something to heal this hole inside me
The more I shovel in the more I fear
That it’s only getting deeper and darker in here
And I’m sinking in so slowly
‘neath this sea of sorrow in my heart
The silence holds me heavy as a mother’s murderous hand upon her unborn child
All this doubt…it wears me out…and lays me down, down, down…
and robs my soul of every little ounce of peace I ever found…..
I been blowin’ up my bridges one by one
And I hold my breath to curse the morning sun but still it rises
The more I drink the more pills that I swallow
The more it seems to me I’ve never felt so hollow
And I’m sifting through these ashes
For something beautiful to believe
But just for a thrill, Doubt paints his deadly target on my heart and shoots to kill
And all this doubt….it wears me out…and lays me down, down, down…
And then you come along
Singing songs over me
Light floods in
all darkness flees
With just one word from your lips
one touch of your fingertips
I feel the burden lift
You lighten up my load
You lighten up my load
You take it as your own
You lighten up my load
